Sign Up For New Summer Term Of Adult Education Courses

Published on Friday 22 March 2019

Residents are being invited to sign up to learn something new this summer with Derbyshire County Council’s Adult Community Education Service.

Bookings are now open for hundreds of daytime and evening courses and activities on offer providing opportunities for people to study for new qualifications or explore new hobbies and interests.

The summer term starts on Monday 29 April and residents can view the course brochures online at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/adulteducation or pick one up from their local Adult Community Education Centre or Library.

Residents can book onto a course by calling, emailing, or visiting the centre where their chosen course is being held. Details of local centres are available at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/ACEcentres

Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Young People, Councillor Alex Dale, said: “We have lots of courses on offer this summer for residents wanting to learn at any level in a range of subjects.

“Why not challenge yourself to learn something new whether it’s a new hobby or study for a career change.

“We offer support and guidance to help you choose your course or to help you onto a new career path, and you could meet lots of new people along the way too.”

Residents employed and earn less than £15,736.50 per year could be eligible to study for a vocational qualification up to level two for free. Conditions apply.

Students can gain professional qualifications in practical skills such as plastering, bricklaying and plumbing at the county council’s Training and Skills for Construction Centre in Holmewood, near Clay Cross and the Toolbox Centre in Gamesley, near Glossop, which residents can sign up to at any time throughout the year.

There are also courses to help people move into work such as help using computers, developing confidence for work and education, move into business, administration or the customer service sectors and free English and maths courses.

Other subjects include photography, sewing and textiles, floristry, painting and drawing, cookery, mindfulness, archaeology, dry stone walling, health and wellbeing, British Sign Language, upholstery, pottery, languages, fitness (such as Zumba, Pilates and yoga), personal development and opportunities for families to learn together.
