Park Up For Free Child Car Seat Safety Checks In Derbyshire

Published on Wednesday 20 March 2019

Motorists are being encouraged to take advantage of expert road safety advice and get their child car seats checked free-of-charge.

Derbyshire’s road safety team will be on hand to check and provide demonstrations on the correct fitting of car seats at three venues across the county from next month.

Checks will be carried out at:

•           Sainsbury’s, Rother Way, Chesterfield –  Friday 5 April, 10am to 2pm
•           East Midlands Designer Outlet, Mansfield Road, South Normanton – Tuesday 9 April, 10am to 1.30pm
•           Morrisons, Bakewell Road, Buxton – Monday 13 May, 10am to 1.30pm.

Car seats vary in design and advice will also be given on choosing the right seat for particular vehicles.

Councillor Simon Spencer, Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Infrastructure, said: “All aspects of road safety remain a top priority for us and it’s so important that seats are fitted properly to offer maximum protection. It’s vital that motorists travelling with youngsters understand the importance of choosing the correct seat for their vehicle and then getting it installed correctly.”

The law says that passengers under the age of 12 must use some form of car seat unless they are 135cms tall or above. The type of seat a child needs depends on their weight.

Advice about fitting car seats can also be found at www.childseats.org.uk – a website that was set up by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents with funding from the Department for Transport
