PCC's call for action on Knife Crime

Published on Wednesday 20 March 2019

Following a national roundtable meeting between Police and Crime Commissioners and government ministers looking at the current rise in knife crime, Derbyshire’s PCC Hardyal Dhindsa is set to invite the county’s local authorities and partners to a local roundtable event to look at how they can come together to tackle the issue of County Lines which sees vulnerable young people targeted to help with the supply of drugs to county towns and villages.

Speaking about the proposed meeting PCC Dhindsa said:

“There are well evidenced links between the distribution of drugs and the use of violence either to defend markets or intimidate the vulnerable into getting involved. If we as partners can come together to help those involved find a route out of this dangerous world and prevent those on the edges of criminality from getting involved, we should expect to see an impact on levels of violent crime, and those crimes involving weapons such as knives.

“No single agency is able to tackle this alone and I am seeking to use the convening power of the role of Police and Crime Commissioner to bring partners together and develop solutions that will offer positive outcomes that a greater than the sum of parts contributed by those involved.

“Both the public and voluntary sectors have important roles to play and by combining our efforts, and importantly resources, we should be able to deliver for the young people and communities of Derbyshire and help fight the scourge of County Lines.”
