Council Funding Benefits Community Arts Groups

Nine community arts groups are to benefit from grants totalling almost £140,000 from Derbyshire County Council.

All nine groups work in the community bringing arts, performances, creative activities, music and workshops to a range of people across the county.

The work carried out by these organisations benefits children in care, learning disabled and disabled people of all ages, people at risk of rural isolation or without transport, those on low incomes and residents living in care homes.

Derbyshire County Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Leadership, Culture and Tourism, Councillor Barry Lewis said: “These groups widen access to the arts and bring enormous benefits to our communities. We’re delighted to be able to support them for the coming year.

“Many people find it hard to access arts and culture, music, film and live performances because of where they live or their circumstances, but these groups make it possible and open up new opportunities to thousands of people.”

Fleet Arts was granted £18,006. It is based in Belper and works across Amber Valley and mid-Derbyshire, with arts, music and crafts, for example taking young musicians to perform at the annual Off The Tracks music festival at Castle Donington, prioritising work with people who are socially excluded or disadvantaged, especially disabled people, people on low incomes and people experiencing rural isolation.

Ola Wilson, manager of Fleet Arts, said: “This is great news. We rely on funding to deliver our diverse creative workshops across the region. It means we can keep running.”

Ola added that involvement in the arts helps with young people’s confidence and self-esteem.

Fleet Arts, a community arts charity, was granted £18,006. It is based in Belper and works across Amber Valley and mid-Derbyshire, delivering diverse and engaging arts, for example taking young musicians to perform some of their own music at the annual Off The Tracks music festival at Castle Donington.  It is currently prioritising arts and health work with a wide range of groups and organisations.

Ola Wilson, manager of Fleet Arts, said: “This is great news. We rely on some core funding to help us keep running and we can then source other grants to deliver our diverse creative workshops, projects and events across the region.”

Ola added that involvement in the arts continually helps build people’s confidence, socialisation and self-esteem.
