Somercotes Choral Society announces April concert in Somercotes!

Published on Tuesday 19 February 2019

Somercotes Choral Society’s April concert is entitled ‘As Time Goes By.’ This is apt as the society, after performing in many venues as time has gone by, is now returning to the village.

Their next concert will be at Somercotes Village Hall on Saturday 27th April at 7pm.

They will be joined by Nottingham saxophonist Alastair Parnell.

Tickets are £8 and £4 for under 16s. They are available from Jen Adams on 01773 789079.

Jen, the Choral Society’s Chairwoman, says that the choir was formed in 1953 in Somercotes by the late Wilfred Clarke. His son Jeff is still a member.

“In later years we have toured around the area for our two concerts each year, so it is pleasing to return to the village which gives us our name.”

.Jen comments: “We have a pleasing programme of songs going back to the 1930s and As Time Goes By is, of course, featured.”

Other items include an Everly Brothers tribute, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Whistle Down the Wind and The Wizard of Oz.

“We are delighted to welcome our guest Alastair Parnell,” added Jen.

A graduate of the Royal College of Music, Alistair has a busy schedule.

It includes teaching, performing, composing, arranging and conducting.

He is Visiting Scholar of Saxophone at the University of Nottingham.

As a performer, Alistair works with some of the country’s leading saxophone ensembles and he is director of the innovative Equinox Saxophone Ensemble. He has performed throughout the UK, USA and Europe and has appeared at five World Saxophone Congresses.

The Choral Society’s Musical Director is Neil Farley of Belper and the accompanist is John Hobbs of Risley.

The choir practises at Swanwick School and Sports College, Hayes Lane, Swanwick every Tuesday evening. They welcome new members, particularly men.
