Ripley to be wool bombed

Published on Thursday 7 February 2019

Ripley Town Council are looking for local schools, nurseries, craft groups, Scouts and Guides, individuals and businesses to come together to ‘wool bomb’ Ripley Market Place this May. If they get lots of people interested in taking part, the trees on Crossley Park will be decorated too.

Wool bombing is when you cover objects or structures, in this case, trees in Ripley, with decorative knitted or crocheted materials as a form of street art. Ripley Town Council would like to encourage schools, groups, businesses and individuals within the wider Ripley Township (Heage, Nether Heage, Bullbridge, Sawmills, Waingroves, Marehay, Street Lane and Lower Hartshay) to take part and wool bomb a tree in Ripley too.

The wool bombs will be officially opened at the Ripley Spring Festival on Sunday 19th May 2019 and will be in situ until 3rd June, after the spring half-term break.

We are looking for participants to knit/ crochet whatever they like, for example, animals, insects, people, flowers, pom-poms and scarves to be placed on the trees. They don’t have to be perfect, just colourful!

Ripley Town Council are working alongside Ripley St. John’s School to lead the project. Deputy Town Clerk, Hannah Curzon said, ‘It is great to be working with local schools and groups to bring some vibrancy and fun to the town this spring. Young people will be learning new skills like knitting and sewing as well as having the excitement of being able to share their creation with the local community’. She added, ‘We hope that people from outside the town will come and have a look at the creations too’.

If you would like your school, craft group, Scout, Guide group or business to be involved and create a ‘wool bomb’ or if you are a local resident with knitting skills and would like to take part, please get in touch with Hannah by emailing deputyclerk@ripleytowncouncil.gov.uk or by calling 01773 513456 (Mon-Fri 10am until 3pm) or please call in to the Ripley Town Council office on Grosvenor Road.
