Derby College Group Expands Enrichment Opportunities

Published on Wednesday 16 January 2019

Derby College is expanding its pioneering programme that aims to broaden students’ horizons and aspirations with fun and stimulating activities.

The College-wide enrichment programme already involves hundreds of students in the city centre, Ilkeston and Morley with activities ranging from lyric writing to taking part in cultural activities such as Black Awareness Month.

Further activities planned including workshops focusing on rap music, graffiti art, music production and street dance.

Head of Behaviour for Learning Aaron Denton explained: “The enrichment programme has so far included a wide range of activities which are designed to bring students together to increase their confidence, self esteem and communication.

“We have a wonderfully diverse student community from different backgrounds and cultures so this is a chance for them to share experiences with each other and to help develop everyone’s softer skills which are so vital to their attitudes to learning now and in their future working lives.

“We recently held a taster day in partnership with Derby-based community arts organisation Baby People which highlighted a host of future music, dance, cultural activities that we will be introducing and the feedback was excellent across the study body.”

Amongst the successful programmes have been lyric writing workshops run by artists from city-based Global Education Derby – Sophie Sparham and Karnage W.

Health and Social Care student Emma Watson (18) and Construction student Korban Whitaker (16) have been amongst those attending.

Emma said: “I have loved the opportunity to develop my creative skills and write various songs and poems which I have then performed in the College.

“This has given me so much more confidence and shown me just what I can achieve if I believe in myself and control my nerves.”

Korban, who hopes to join the Army after College, added: “It’s been great to be able to do things outside the classroom and workshop and this has really helped me grow as a person.”
