Sign Up To Learn Something New In The New Year

Published on Monday 26 November 2018

Residents are being invited to sign up to learn something new in the New Year with Derbyshire County Council’s Adult Community Education Service.

Bookings can be made from today (Monday 26 November) for hundreds of daytime and evening courses and activities on offer providing people with the chance to study for new qualifications, improve their employment opportunities or explore new hobbies and interests.

The spring term starts on Monday 7 January 2019 and people can sign up online at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/adulteducation

This year, learners enrolled onto vocational qualifications up to Level 2 who are employed and earn less than £15,737 per year are entitled to full fee remission. Residents must provide a wage slip dated within three months of the learning start date, or current employment contract, which states gross monthly/annual wages.

Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Young People Councillor Alex Dale said: “We’re delighted to announce that bookings are now open for hundreds of fantastic courses starting in the New Year.

“From maths and English to languages and construction skills – there are courses to suit everyone studying at all different levels.

“So why not challenge yourself and see where learning something new can take you.”

There are free courses to help people get back into work such as English and maths, CV writing, job applications and interview skills, advice on starting your own business and a range of traineeships and apprenticeships.

Other courses include:

• Computer skills
• Social media for small businesses
• DIY for beginners
• Garden mosaic making
• Dry stone walling
• First Aid
• Art – painting with watercolours
• Be your own boss
• Upholstery
• Keep fit – yoga, tap dancing
• Get the most out of your iPad
• Book binding
• Introduction to psychology
• British Sign Language

And many more.

Gift vouchers are available in denominations of £5, £10, £20 and £50 which can be put towards the cost of courses.

Classes are held at county council adult community education centres as well as at around 80 community venues. Residents can find their nearest centre by visiting www.derbyshire.gov.uk/acecentres

Residents without internet access can sign up using a computer at any of the council’s libraries or call in at their local adult community centre to book a place.

Course listings are also available in the ‘What’s on’ leaflets at adult community education centres, libraries and other locations around the county.
