County Council And School Governors Put Quality Education At The Heart Of New Agreement

Published on Monday 12 November 2018

School improvement and high standards of educational achievement are the focus of a new agreement signed by Derbyshire County Council and school governors.

The council has renewed its partnership with Derbyshire School Governors’ Association (DSGA) including awarding a £2,500 grant to support its work over the next 12 months.

DSGA is an independent voluntary organisation open to governors in all Derbyshire schools which works with the council to promote school improvement, support educational achievement and encourage high standards of governance.

The agreement, signed by the council’s Cabinet Member for Young People Councillor Alex Dale and DSGA Chair Martin Brader, reinforces a commitment by both organisations to continue a proactive working partnership to ensure the effectiveness of school improvement strategies.

Councillor Dale said: “I consider good leadership and governance to be a key component of our strategy to improve schools and I’m delighted to renew this agreement with DSGA.

“DSGA has worked well with us for many years to support Derbyshire school governing boards and is always willing to support us through attendance at our school governor events, promoting the training we offer and helping us build good relationships with governors across the county.

“School governors have a key role to play as champions for children and this agreement is a positive sign of the shared commitment between the county council and DSGA to work together to help all our students achieve their full potential.”

By renewing the partnership agreement the DSGA and the county council will continue to work together on a number of commitments including to:

• Promote school improvement and high standards of educational achievement
• Develop school governors’ understanding of the range of support available to provide good outcomes for children
• Encourage, support and promote cooperation between governing bodies to further the interests of all children attending Derbyshire schools
• Support and encourage high quality training for governors and governing bodies in Derbyshire
• Hold meetings, seminars, workshops, courses, exhibitions and conferences for school governors to support the provision of high quality education in Derbyshire

The council will also work with DSGA to ensure governor representatives sit on statutory committees and other relevant groups and are used as a consultative body for school related issues.

DSGA Chair Martin Brader said: “We are very pleased to sign this agreement and renew our excellent working partnership with the county council, particularly at a time when many other local authorities are cutting back on support for governors.

“Becoming a school governor gives you an opportunity to be part of an effective team. The role of school governor is both a serious undertaking and enormously rewarding. Not only do governors bring their own knowledge and skills to the role, but, in learning how schools are run, they often develop their understanding of leadership.

“The majority of employers appreciate this and are supportive of their staff taking on the responsibility. In addition, contributing to the growth and development of a school and seeing tangible improvements in the attainment and wellbeing of the children is a satisfying and important contribution to the local community.”

There are numerous vacancies for school governors across Derbyshire, particularly for people with relevant skills to support schools and help drive up standards.

Councillor Dale added: “Being a school governor is a way of influencing the quality of education in our local schools, helping our children to get the best possible start and preparing them to move into the world of work. We’re always looking for new recruits.

“We’re looking for people with a broad range of skills to consider being school governors. This may be people who have specific knowledge and skills such as learning, finance or performance or those who bring a keen understanding and passion for their local community.”
