Leisure Centres finalists in Dementia Friendly Awards

Published on Sunday 4 November 2018

Launched by Alzheimer's Society in 2013 the awards celebrate and showcase the achievements of those across the UK who are leading the way on creating dementia-friendly communities and improving the lives of everybody affected by dementia.

Ripley and William Gregg VC Leisure Centres have both been nominated under the category ‘Dementia Friendly Organisation of the Year - Small & Medium’.

A member of the Centre’s Dementia Friendly Swimming Group submitted the nomination. Ripley Leisure Centre became the first swimming pool in Derbyshire to launch a weekly Dementia Friendly Swim session. The sessions have grown in popularity, extending into the Centre’s ‘Walking4Health’ walking sessions.

Following this success, in June 2018 a second Dementia Friendly Swim session was introduced at William Gregg VC Leisure Centre.

Commenting on the achievement, Amber Valley Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Housing & Public Health, Cllr Paul Hillier, said: “These dementia-friendly sessions are a great example of how we try and develop activities that are accessible to all and we are delighted at this recognition.”

Jenny Hedgecock, General Manager at Ripley Leisure Centre, added: “Being shortlisted as one of the Dementia Friendly Awards finalists is just amazing. We would not be where we are now without the support of the participants whom we have listened to, to shape our delivery to meet the varying needs of the people in our community living with dementia. We welcome newcomers so please pop in for a chat at Ripley LC on a Wednesday afternoon 2.30pm – 3.30pm and at William Gregg VC on a Monday morning 10:30am – 11:30am.”
