Poppy Path at Cromford Mills

Published on Thursday 25 October 2018

On Saturday 10th November at 11am, a very special First World War memorial project will be unveiled at Cromford Mills World Heritage site.

The ‘Poppy Path’ was conceived by Cromford Mills’ Chief Executive, Simon Wallwork, alongside Hecate Arts Ltd, and has been developed over the summer through a range of free family workshops and activities with visitors to the mill site. Inspired by the stories of the fallen, visitors to Cromford Mills have created pieces of art which will form an exhibition backdrop for the memorial over the weekend of the 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day. .

The project has drawn on the heritage of the site and its connections to Cromford village. The panels have been created from linen and pigment, chosen because of the mills use during 1914-18 war years. During this period Cromford Mills was home to the Troy Laundry and Cromford Colour Company, employing many local people.

The ‘Poppy Path’ is being opened along the pathway which joins Cromford Mill to St Mary’s Church, which was also built by the Arkwright family.  The ‘Poppy Path’ commemorates the fallen from Cromford village in a permanent memorial which will enhance and grow into the environment creating a space for reflection and remembrance.

The memorial itself will be formed by an avenue of plaques and tiles created by pupils from Cromford Primary School and placed alongside specially selected plants to create a growing, developing landscape to be appreciated by visitors throughout the year.

The opening event on Saturday 10th November will see local dance school and drama group, ‘Peak Ballet’ and ‘Tinderbox Theatre Company’ present their specially created performance pieces using the ‘Poppy Path’ as a back drop and will provide an immersive thought provoking experience.

To continue the connection between the history of Cromford and the Arkwright family, part of the performance will take place in the grounds of Willersley Castle.  There is also an opportunity to explore the grounds searching for poppy painted rocks completed as part of the project.  Visitors can also stop for lunch and look back towards Cromford Mills and St Mary’s Church, and the ‘Poppy Path’ itself.
