National Adoption Week Shines A Light On Finding Loving Homes For Derbyshire Children

Published on Tuesday 9 October 2018

It’s National Adoption Week this month and Derbyshire residents are being asked to consider if they could give a child a loving home.

Derbyshire County Council needs adoptive parents all year round but will be shining a spotlight on recruitment during National Adoption Week which this year runs from Monday 15 to Sunday 21 October.

The council’s need for adoptive families for the children in its care will be highlighted throughout the week and the county council is holding a drop-in information event at County Hall in Matlock on Wednesday 17 October from 5pm to 8pm with a welcome and presentation at 6pm.

Staff will be on hand to talk about the process and the training and support the county council offers and parents who’ve adopted with the council will talk about their experience and about the children who need loving homes.

These needs change regularly as children come into care and others are successfully adopted, but the council is currently looking for homes for single children and sibling groups of two or more brothers and sisters of all ages and with a range of needs.

During National Adoption Week the council is keen to dispel the myths around who can apply to be assessed as prospective adoptive parents.

Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Young People Councillor Alex Dale said: “We’re looking for adopters from all walks of life and don’t want anyone to feel they’ve missed the opportunity to be parents or to add to their family. Even people who’ve ruled themselves out of adoption for one reason or another may have just the qualities we’re looking for.

“We’re looking for parents for children of all ages and abilities as well as those who can help us keep brothers and sisters together. If you have space in your family, a spare bedroom and are interested in adopting our recruitment team would love to hear from you.

“Our information event is the perfect opportunity for anyone interested in adoption to ask questions and have a friendly, informal chat with our team who will talk them through the process and the children we need homes for.

“Adopting can be incredibly rewarding and creates families that are together for life. We match children with the family or parent that’s right for them and offer ongoing support.”

Lots of people are eligible to adopt:
• There is no upper age limit
• You can be single, in a relationship, straight, gay or trans
• From any ethnic origin
• Working or not
• A homeowner or renting – you need to have a spare bedroom
• You may have a disability
• You may have children living at home

Adoptive parents must be:
• Aged 21 or over
• Have no criminal offences involving children
• Legally resident in the UK for at least a year
• Healthy and energetic enough to provide a home for childhood and beyond
• Flexible and resilient to adapt to the needs of children who’ve had a tough start in life

The council’s adoption drop-in information evert will take place on Wednesday 17 October from 5pm to 8pm, including a welcome and presentation at 6pm, at County Hall, Smedley Street, Matlock, Derbyshire, DE4 3AG.
