Quit Smoking For Good This Stoptober

Published on Monday 24 September 2018

Derbyshire smokers are being urged to quit for 28 days and see the difference that it can make.

October 1 sees the launch of this year’s Stoptober challenge. The annual campaign, run by Public Health England, attracts thousands of people keen to quit.

Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Communities Councillor Carol Hart said: “Smoking remains one of the biggest causes of preventable illness and premature death in Derbyshire.

“If you’re thinking of quitting smoking, Stoptober is a great opportunity to sign-up with thousands of other people who are keen to quit.”

Research shows that you’re four times more likely to quit with your local stop smoking service.

Derbyshire County Council’s Live Life Better Derbyshire team will be holding a series of drop in stop smoking information and support events throughout October.

You do not need an appointment to take part and these will be held at the following venues:

Tues 2 October 10am – 2pm South Normanton Library
Wed 3 October 11am - 2pm Ashbourne Library
Tues 9 October 8am – 2pm   Springs Health Centre, Clowne
Mon 15 October 10am - 2pm  Bakewell Agriculture Centre
Tues 16 October 9:30am–3pm Crags Health Centre, Whitwell
Wed 17 October 10am -1pm  Hannage Brook Surgery, Wirksworth
Wed 24 October 10am -1pm St Oswald’s Hospital, Ashbourne
Wed 31 October 10am -1pm  Ashbourne Library
Tues 6 October 2:30pm-4:30pm Lime Grove Medical Centre, Matlock

Derbyshire has seen a reduction in estimated adult smoking from 20.5% in 2010 to 15.1% in 2017.

Cllr Hart added: “We’re pleased to see that the number of people smoking in Derbyshire continues to decrease and we’ll continue to support people who want to quit.

“We are working hard in Derbyshire to help reduce the harmful effects of smoking and our Live Life Better Derbyshire healthy lifestyles services offers free help and support to people who want to quit for good.”
