Published on Monday 24 September 2018

Community care centres, residential homes and day centres are celebrating after gardens designed by residents scooped prizes in an annual competition organised by Derbyshire County Council.

This is the 23rd year the authority has held the competition, attracting a wide range of entries from groups of people who use council-run day services or live in residential or children’s homes.

Residents of all ages teamed up with care centre staff and volunteers to help transform their surroundings using baskets, centrepieces, plants and flowers to brighten up borders and pots.

Parkwood Day Centre in Alfreton were this year’s big winners, taking home first place in three categories – Best Full Garden, Best Sensory Garden and Best Vegetable Garden.

Queens Court Day Centre in Buxton scooped up two prizes, coming first in the Best New Entrant and Best Garden Craftwork categories.

The county council’s flagship community care centre Florence Shipley in Heanor won first prize for Best Before and After Pictures, while Hill View Children’s Home in Chinley took top place for Best Wildlife Garden.

Other winners include Ambervale Resource Centre in Ripley which came first in the Best Tubs, Boxes and Baskets category, Castle Court in Swadlincote which won Best Small Garden and Solomon House Children’s Home in Buxton which picked up the Best Eco-friendly Garden prize.

Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Adult Care Councillor Jean Wharmby said:

“We had a great time having a look at everyone’s brilliant gardens and seeing how much they brighten up spaces around the county.

“Everyone involved always puts in so much effort and it’s a great chance for people to really show off their creative skills.

“A massive well-done to all of our residents and staff members who took part – everybody should be very proud of all they’ve accomplished.”

Councillor Wharmby was joined by Chairman, Councillor George Wharmby as well as Service Director for Adult Care, Simon Stevens to present a total of 41 Prizes at an awards ceremony held at County Hall, Matlock.

All council-run care services in Derbyshire can enter the contest and it has helped transform gardens, buildings and communal areas across the county.
