Reaching New Heights As Council Strengthens International Links

Published on Wednesday 5 September 2018

Students from Japan experienced the Heights of Abraham and got a taste of the county’s football as celebrations kicked off for Derbyshire’s 20th twinning anniversary with Toyota City.

Reaching new heights: Councillor Judith Twigg, Vice Chair of Derbyshire County Council with students Minato Kai, Daiki Kato and Nachi Kojima at the Heights of Abraham.

As well as visiting the sky-high Matlock Bath beauty spot, the students – who are part of the Toyota City under 12s football club – laced up their boots for a couple of friendly matches against Derby County FC under 12s and Burton Albion under 12s.

A programme of events is taking place over the next three months to mark the 20-year twinning partnership between Toyota City in Japan, Derbyshire County Council, Derby City Council and South Derbyshire District Council.

The partnership was established in 1998 – six years after car giant Toyota Manufacturing UK built its first European factory in Burnaston outside Derby.

Since then, a series of projects and exchanges have taken place between Toyota City, Derby and Derbyshire on an annual basis, creating networks for future work between the regions.

More than 1,000 young people from Derbyshire have taken part in an exchange visit, staying with families, attending school, performing music and visiting significant sites such as Hiroshima and Kyoto city.

And to mark the 20th anniversary, the partnership is improving its educational, environmental, economic and sporting links as well as expanding the civic relationship to include the University of Derby, Derby College, The National Forest, Marketing Derby, Marketing Peak District and Derbyshire, East Midlands Chamber of Commerce.

Councillor Judith Twigg, Vice Chair of Derbyshire County Council, said: “We’re delighted to welcome our friends from Toyota City to Derbyshire as the celebrations to mark our 20th twinning anniversary begin.

“We’ve built a strong foundation together and we’ll be strengthening our relationship further in the years ahead by improving our educational, environmental, economic and sporting links.

“We’re looking forward to the next few months as we continue to work together and learn from each another.”

More students from Japan will travel to the county in September to meet Derbyshire students and take part in a range of activities including a stay at the county council’s Lea Green Outdoor Activities Centre.

Other events include the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding to re-affirm the twinning link between the two regions with a commitment to explore further opportunities to work together.

Delegates from Derbyshire are also set to visit Toyota City to promote and represent the county’s businesses at this year’s Industry Festival and an official celebration event will take place at County Hall in Matlock closer to the anniversary which is on Saturday 17 November.

The Japanese delegation includes representatives from Toyota City Council, Toyota Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Toyota Agricultural Association, Toyota City Cultural Promotion Foundation and Toyota City International Association.
