Celebrations in Heanor and Ripley for World Breastfeeding Week 2018 in Derbyshire

Published on Wednesday 8 August 2018

Young families across Derbyshire have been involved in a series of #BigLatchOn celebrations as part of a worldwide drive to promote breastfeeding, during World Breastfeeding Week 2018.

#BigLatchOn parties welcomed young families to Heanor’s Shipley Country Park and Ripley’s Crossley Park on Sunday 5 August, among other events in Derbyshire between 1 – 7 August.

The number of breastfeeding babies and toddlers who “latch-on” are being counted to reach a worldwide grand total for World Breastfeeding Week. The Derbyshire Breastfeeding Network, Ilkeston Cradles and local BEARS group which offers breastfeeding support to new parents in Amber Valley, were involved in organising the events.

Promoting breastfeeding is one of the priorities of NHS services and local authorities in Derbyshire. Iris Johns, infant and child nutrition lead for Derbyshire Community Health Services Foundation Trust, said: “Events like this are helping to create a real family atmosphere around breastfeeding, not just for new parents but also for the next generation who can see that breastfeeding is normal.” The NHS in Derbyshire has appointed healthy family peer support workers to assist mums with breastfeeding in the early weeks at home with their babies.

Derbyshire County Council has recently produced a new Breastfeeding Charter setting out its commitment to promote and protect breastfeeding. Details of Derbyshire’s Breastfeeding Welcome Here Awards and the Breastfeeding Charter can be found via the Life Live Better Derbyshire website. https://www.livelifebetterderbyshire.org.uk/2072-2/

Volunteers from local breastfeeding support groups play a vital part in supporting new mums in Derbyshire who want to breastfeed. Francesca Elver-Fiddimore, breastfeeding volunteer coordinator for Derbyshire, said: “We’re all mums ourselves and can offer that friendly peer-to-peer support to new parents.”

The Breastfeeding Network in Derbyshire is offering training courses for mums who want to volunteer themselves to help support other parents who are new to breastfeeding. For more details about the training please email: derbyshire@breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk
