St Oswald's Hospital opens its door for a vintage garden party celebrating #NHS70

Published on Thursday 12 July 2018

St Oswald’s Hospital, Ashbourne, is hosting a vintage afternoon garden party this Friday (13 July), starting at 2pm, to celebrate the NHS’s 70th anniversary. All are welcome.

The party is being organised by hospital staff and volunteers from befriending service Careline, which is based at St Oswald’s Hospital.

Pat Arnold, site manager for St Oswald’s Hospital, said: “This has been a real community effort with lots of people involved in making it a special occasion. We hope people will come along to enjoy the party and help us celebrate the NHS’ 70th anniversary.”

Pupils from Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Ashbourne, have created 40 art works on the theme of the NHS at 70 for display at the party.

Ashbourne resident and veteran former nurse Be (correct spelling) Payne, who is a volunteer with Careline, will judge the art work to pick winners in two age categories, for pupils aged 11-12 and 13-14.

Staff from the hospital’s Okeover Ward, led by ward manager Aoife Gibbons, have organised a tombola stall with generously donated prizes.

Nostalgic music from the 1940s, 50s and 60s will be provided by singing trio The Foxgloves with music popular during the NHS’s early decades.  A guess the name of the bear competition, refreshments and raffle will be among the other attractions. Ashbourne’s mayor Sue Bull is expected to attend.

Pat added: “Ashbourne Historical Society presented us with two pictures of Ashbourne recently, including a map of the town dating back to the 1500s. We are inviting members of the historical society to thank them as well.”

All proceeds from the vintage garden party will be shared between Careline and DCHS Charitable Trust. DCHS Charitable Trust is dedicated to raising funds to enhance patient comfort on behalf of Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust, which includes St Oswald’s Hospital http://www.dchs.nhs.uk/charitable-funds

Careline has around 65 volunteers who provide a free telephone befriending service to around 100 isolated or lonely people living in Derbyshire Dales and East Staffordshire. More details about Careline are here: www.carelinecalling.org.uk

Jo Bradley, for Careline, said: “We’ve started holding a monthly coffee morning in the hospital on the second Friday each month, from 10am until midday, to which anyone can come, it’s about bringing the community together. This month it’s a bit different, with the vintage garden party in the afternoon instead, to join in with the celebrations for the NHS 70th anniversary.”
