Derbyshire Libraries Get Up To Mischief This Summer

by Amber Valley Info on Wednesday 11 July 2018

Children are being encouraged to become “Mischief Makers” by signing up to this year’s Summer Reading Challenge.

The Summer Reading Challenge 2018 is being run by Derbyshire County Council’s libraries in partnership with The Reading Agency and it officially begins on Saturday 14 July.

As well as promoting reading for pleasure the challenge will encourage children to make their own board games, create comic strips, take part in a treasure hunt, have a go at Beano-themed craft activities, learn magic tricks, practical jokes and secret writing.

Children who sign up to the challenge will be encouraged to read up to six books over the summer break which will help to maintain their literacy skills, with the Mischief Makers theme specifically designed to be fun and exciting.

Each year the Summer Reading Challenge helps to get around 750,000 children into libraries nationally at a time when their reading skills can drop off.

In Derbyshire more than 9,000 children signed up last year, borrowing more than 118,000 children’s library items, with more than 2,700 children taking part in 186 Summer Reading Challenge activities held in the county council’s 45 libraries.

Derbyshire County Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Leadership, Culture and Tourism Councillor Barry Lewis said: “The Summer Reading Challenge is a fantastic way to ensure children keep up their reading skills over the long summer holiday.

“Motivating children to read independently and more frequently has really important benefits for their development and educational achievement.”

As well as encouraging children to sign up, the county council is also appealing to young people to get involved and volunteer with running aspects of the challenge.

Volunteers should be aged between 13 and 24, interested in children’s literature, enthusiastic about reading and able to work as a team. To find out more about volunteering to help with the challenge ask at a local library or apply online www.derbyshire.gov.uk/summerreadingchallenge

The challenge runs from 14 July to 8 September and children can sign up at any county council library.

When children have read six books of their choice they get a medal and certificate to mark their achievement.
