Food safety issues lead to big fine for Heanor business

Published on Friday 15 June 2018

Poor hygiene practices and cleanliness found during two separate inspections at UK Fried Chicken in Heanor, led to food business operator, Mehmet Goren, being fined a total of £2,539 by Derby Magistrates on the 14th June.

As a result of the Amber Valley Borough Council prosecution, Mehmet Goren (33) of Jersey Gardens, St Annes, Nottingham, pleaded guilty to 14 offences under The Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013 consisting of 8 offences from the 2nd May and 6 offences from the 28th November 2017.

Offences in May and November 2017 included:

Officers found that some offences at the Market Place business, identified in May, were found to be repeated in November.

Cllr Paul Hillier, Amber Valley Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Housing and Wellbeing commenting: “The Council has a duty to protect the public from such ‘cavalier’ food operators, and ensure the food they buy is safe and the premises that sell it do not expose them to harm. This prosecution, and the sentence imposed by the court, should serve as a warning to other food business operators, as we will not hesitate to take action when the health of our community is put at risk.”

The fine, which was reduced by a third for the guilty plea, consisted of £960 for offences in May, £960 for November, £523 costs and £96 victim surcharge.
