Aldercar Students Bury Time Capsule To Celebrate Rebuild

Published on Tuesday 12 June 2018

Students in Langley Mill have celebrated the rebuilding of their school by burying a time capsule.

Work to rebuild Aldercar High School began in 2015 and the students created the capsule to mark the start of the £12m project, which has been funded by Derbyshire County Council.

With the work now complete the students have buried the capsule in the school grounds, containing photos of the previous school buildings and plans for the new, as well as other items, such as a collection of the top ten chart hits from the week the work officially began.

Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Young People Councillor Alex Dale said: “I’m delighted the students and staff are now able to make the most of their superb new facilities and it’s great that they’ve chosen such a novel way to celebrate the completion of the work.

“It’s not often that we are able to commit the resources necessary to carry out a complete school rebuilding project, so when we can it is wonderful to see the inspirational learning environment we have helped to create.”

The first phase of the project saw a new three-storey block built to replace the old timber framed building.

It included specialist rooms for food technology, design and graphics, art, science class rooms and laboratories, fully-equipped ICT suites and a media room.

Also constructed during that phase was a multi-purpose hall with retractable seating, and lighting and sound equipment for performances.

Phase two began in 2017 and included a two-storey building with a dozen new classrooms, a music room with music practice facilities, a teacher training observation classroom library and an enhanced resource for special needs teaching.

The final element of the project included reinstating the car parking area and playing field, creating a new pedestrian entrance and restoring the external areas.

The work completes a wholesale modernisation project which also includes the construction of a new sixth form block in 2007 and a sports hall four years later.

Deputy headteacher Chris McGraw said: “We are delighted to be coming to the end of the build programme which has had over £17 million pounds invested in new facilities over the last 10 years. It has given us state-of-the-art facilities across the school for our pupils and the community.

“We would like to thank Derbyshire County Council for their support and investment in creating these outstanding facilities.

"It is a very exciting time for Aldercar High School. Our results last year placed us as one of the fastest improving schools for student progress and we have also seen a considerable increase in applications for places at the school. Coupled with a magnificent new learning environment and facilities, it all bodes well for the school’s future.”
