Drop In To Your Local Library To Find Out More On Proposed Changes

Published on Saturday 19 May 2018

Residents are being encouraged to find out more about proposals to change the way libraries are run in the future by visiting a drop-in session at their local library.

Derbyshire County Council unveiled its proposed Derbyshire Public Library Service Strategy `Libraries for Derbyshire’ last month, setting out its commitment to the library service and outlining proposals to secure its future.

A 12-week consultation about the proposed strategy is now up and running and Derbyshire residents are being encouraged to have their say on the plans, which include 25 libraries remaining under council control and 20 libraries being taken over and managed by local community groups or interested parties.

As part of the consultation, the council has organised drop-in sessions at all of its 45 libraries so that people can find out more about the plans, speak to staff and ask questions.

Drop-in sessions are now underway and dates and times can be found by visiting

People unable to attend a drop-in at their local library are more than welcome to attend a session at any library.

More information on the proposals, including profiles of the 20 libraries proposed for community management, can be found at the same web address, and people can also fill out the online consultation questionnaire.

Paper copies of the questionnaire are now available at every library and on mobile libraries for people who are unable to fill it in online.

As well as the drop-in sessions, focus groups are also being set up in areas where the local library is proposed to be transferred to community management.

Focus groups will encourage more in-depth discussions on the proposals and the opportunity for people to find out more about the challenges and practicalities of running a community library.

People can register for a focus group at the same web address

Derbyshire County Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Leadership, Culture and Tourism Councillor Barry Lewis said: “We know how important our libraries are to communities across Derbyshire and are doing all we can to ensure that everyone knows about our proposals and has the opportunity to have their say.

“We are confident our plans will secure the future of our libraries but we’re open to alternative suggestions on how the service could be run and encourage everyone with an interest to get involved.”
