Workshops, Advice And Information During Dementia Action Week

Published on Saturday 19 May 2018

Learn more about dementia and where to get support at a series of events organised by Derbyshire County Council and a range of key partners during Dementia Action Week 2018.

Conferences, workshops and Dementia Friends sessions are open to anyone interested in finding out about the condition which is thought to affect around 13,000 people in Derbyshire.

Dementia Action Week runs from Monday 21 May to Sunday 27 May and includes week-long information and advice stands at The Hub, South Normanton; County Hall, Matlock, and Royal Derby Hospital.

The county council is working alongside partner organisations including borough and district councils, the Alzheimer’s Society and national charity Making Space to help people gain a better understanding of dementia.

Dementia Friends sessions where people can get training and support to create dementia-friendly communities are taking place throughout the week.

There’s also a virtual dementia experience that uses tools like specialised gloves, goggles and headphones to mimic certain symptoms of dementia – highlighting the issues people face when doing simple things like communicating.

Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Care Councillor Jean Wharmby said: “A big part of tackling dementia is understanding the condition in more depth and how it affects not only individuals, but communities.

“It’s important that people know what’s available to them locally, whether it’s for themselves, friends or family.

“The information, advice and support that is highlighted during Dementia Action Week shows that we’re committed to keeping people well and independent for as long as possible.”
