Somercotes PCSO nominated as part of partnership in line for award to promote sustainable travel

Published on Thursday 12 April 2018

A PCSO from the Somercotes and Riddings Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team is part of a partnership in line for a national award to recognise their contribution to sustainable travel.

It is to recognise his work as part of Derbyshire County Council’s Travel Smart initiative alongside Riddings Infant School, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service and Microscooters UK to organise awareness raising visits and walks to school.

He got involved with the campaign as part of the team’s commitment to targeting road safety in the area, including the dangers due to congestion and parking, which can often be an issue at school start and finish times.

PCSO Plant helped set up visits to the school from police and fire service investigation dog units, as part of the school’s ‘People Who Help Us’ topic.

It was followed up by a sponsored walk or wheel to school which raised more than £100 for the RSPCA and the school then ran whole school walks every Wednesday for parents, children and teachers.

Adult scooters were loaned for the initiative and our officers’ security marked the youngster’s equipment.

He said: “I’m honoured that after winning the regional awards, our work is now in the running for a Modeshift national award in sustainable travel.

“The success is all thanks to an excellent partnership between our officers, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue, Microscooters UK and of course the commitment of staff, parents and pupils at Riddings Infant School.”

The awards are given out annually by Modeshift, a national organisation which aims to increase active and sustainable modes of travel and supports the provision of skills, training and experience to allow young people to travel more actively, safely and independently.

They were nominated by Derbyshire County Council’s Sustainable Travel Team who work to encourage and develop sustainable travel options across the county.

The awards are designed to recognise and reward Modeshift members for schemes, projects or other activities that support and encourage sustainable travel, by highlighting best practise, showing innovation and being inspirational

Nick Butler, National Modeshift Awards Manager, said: “This project has demonstrated creativity and commitment to the cause of sustainable travel by integrating it throughout the academic year. Together the school has established an innovative and exciting rolling programme of activities with partners from the police and fire service to inspire and encourage more active ways to travel.

“It is also great to see staff throughout the school are active advocates taking part in cycling, scooting and walking activities, including those who are trained to deliver Balanceability, and thanks to Microscooters UK a group of parents now act as Scooter Champions scooting to school with their children.”

The winners will be announced on Tuesday, April 24 at the national Modeshift STARS Travel Awards which will be held at The Houses of Parliament in London.
