Hate Crime Helpline Gets Funding Boost
Victims of hate crime and discrimination are set to benefit as Derbyshire County Council continues its support to the countywide Stop Hate helpline.
It means victims can report incidents through the independent helpline which gives them an alternative to reporting it to the police.
Residents can call the free, confidential helpline on 0800 138 1625 or text 07717 989025.
Alternatively, Derbyshire residents can report online at www.stophateuk.org/derbyshire
The £7,000 funding boost from the county council ensures the helpline can continue to operate in Derbyshire until March 2019.
The 24-hour helpline was set up in 2008 and more than 135 people have called it for help and support over the last year.
Hate crime is an under-reported offence and can include physical attacks, the threat of attack or verbal abuse and insults.
According to the Crime Survey for England and Wales there were an estimated 204,000 incidents of hate crime on average each year from 2012/13 to 2015/16.
Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Health and Communities Councillor Carol Hart said: “We want to make sure that everyone can go about their daily lives without fear of discrimination or abuse.
“That’s why we feel it is important to support this helpline so that Derbyshire residents have somewhere to turn for help and support if they need it.
“Someone, somewhere in Derbyshire experiences hate crime every single day and we know that it is under-reported.
“This helpline is a great example of how we are working with colleagues at Derbyshire Constabulary and Derby City Council to protect people from harm.”
Charity Stop Hate UK runs the helpline and provides a variety of ways to access the services including by phone, text, online or via British Sign Language using a video-relay interpretation service.
