Local Man wins NATIONAL Unpaid Carer AWARD
Albert Dooley, from Clay Cross in North East Derbyshire, has won a prestigeous national award in recognition of his devotion to his wife and positive contribution to the lives of others residents at Morton Grange in Alfreton, Derbyshire. The Great British Care Awards are an annual celebration of the very best social care has to offer with over 900 attendees.
92 year old Mr Dooley drives to visit Morton Grange twice daily and volunteers to call the bingo there on a weekly basis. He has also assisted on trips for breakfast, to Southwell Race Course and into the Derbyshire countryside alongside participating in other activities at the home. A lifelong Derby County fan with a keen interest in history and politics he will happily chat with everyone. His visits and interactions with residents can prove a highlight of their day and he especially enjoys sharing the crossword puzzle in his daily paper with them.
Mr Dooley was a finalist for the award (along with 7 other regional winners) having previously won the same award category at the Great East Midlands care awards 2017. He was nominated by proprietor June Rye who said "In the 31 years since opening Morton Grange I have been privilaged to meet many caring and dedicated relatives. Mr Dooley really is exceptional in his devotion to his wife and patience and kindness toward other residents. He seems to especially enjoy our regular Thursday 'pub night' - a social evening with visiting entertainers which encourages relatives, staff and members of the wider community to come and see residents and enjoy live music together."
Mr Dooley was presented with the award at the ICC in Birmingham by Radio 2 presenter Jeremy Vine and veteren GBCA presenter Steve Walls. He was accompanied by his daughter in law and members of the team from Morton Grange, four of whom were also finalists for national awards having won regional ones. He was warmly received by the presenter and received a standing ovation from a 900 strong audience of industry experts, operators, care staff, nominees and winners. He also said a few words which can be seen on a video on the award organisers twitter feed https://twitter.com/GBcareawards
Mr Dooley is the fourth relative that Morton Grange has nominated and the third to win both regional and national awards (along with Mrs Hill 2013/14 and Mr Scott 2015/16). Registered Manager Shanci Mathew said "We are very proud of all that our relatives and staff do to enrich the lives of residents at Morton Grange. Albert is a very special man who deserves recognition for his incredible dedication to his wife".
