A38 - the litter piles up!
The rubbish-strewn verges of the A38 in Amber Valley are posing a massive clean-up challenge for the Borough Council this year.
Cllr Chris Short inspects some of the rubbish collected from the A38’s verges in just two days of the clean-up
A 40m3 container was filled with rubbish from just two days of the spring clean, and with four more days remaining this year’s haul looks likely to be larger than ever.
The clean-up requires that one lane of the dual carriageway be closed during work, and this will continue to happen from 5.00am – 4.00pm, each Sunday during March.
Commented Amber Valley Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Environment, Cllr Chris Short: “Our fears about the level of littering this year have been confirmed. This huge clean-up will cost us between £30,000 and £35,000, and if motorists would only dispose of their litter more appropriately, it’s money we could be spending elsewhere.
“I would also like to appeal to drivers of commercial vehicles to ensure their loads are properly secured to help prevent litter on the scale we are currently seeing.”
