Safer Neighbourhood police car damaged in 'mindless' act of vandalism

Published on Tuesday 13 March 2018

Derbyshire Police's Safer Neighbourhood policing team in Mackworth has had its police car damaged overnight, taking it off the road.

Last night, between 9pm, Sunday, March 11 and 8am, Monday, March 12 the police car had its windscreen smashed as it was parked on Mornington Crescent in Mackworth.

The car was parked outside the library which hosts a police office for the team.

The damage was noticed by PCSO Jenny Sadler from the team as she started her shift covering the areas of Mackworth and Morley.

PCSO Sadler explained: “The team is a mixture of community support and police officers who provide a local policing service to the communities in Mackworth and Morley from the office based in the library.

“Although a large part of our work is done on foot in the area the use of the police car means that we can get to see more people across the patch and respond to incidents quicker if needed.

“The car has had to be recovered to our workshops for repair and so this is a facility we now will not have to serve the people of Mackworth and Morley, it is very frustrating.

“The area is covered by CCTV and we are now trawling that to see if anything was picked up, but we would ask anyone who knows anything about what happened to make contact with us.

Cllr Asaf Afzal, Derby City Council, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Public Protection said: “The Neighbourhood team are there to serve the whole community and the actions of these mindless individuals means that they are unable to do this as effectively.

“I would urge anyone that does have information then please do come forward and contact the police.”

If you have any information about this incident please contact Jenny on 101, quoting reference number 18000113241
