Local festival to celebrate World Earth Day and reduce plastic pollution this April

Published on Wednesday 7 March 2018

The festival, based in Middleton By Wirksworth, near Cromford, will have loads of activities suitable for the whole family, including making sculptures from recycled materials, arts & crafts workshops, walks around the local nature reserve and even train rides!

Events start from 10am and run all day. They are all based at the National Stone Centre site occupied by Mount Cook and the Derbyshire Eco Centre. The Eco Centre is running sustainable building taster sessions, which are bookable before the day and include; green woodworking, dry stone walling and timber framed building. Derbyshire Wildlife Trust is leading guided walks (also bookable before the day) which will take you on a wild flower wander around Gang Mine Nature Reserve, exploring old lead spoil heaps and spotting beautiful bees and butterflies along the way. There will also be the much anticipated Bush Craft sessions at Mount Cook and once you are worn out from all the fun and fresh air, take a train ride with Steeple Grange Light Railway.

This is all in celebration of World Earth Day - a global event which raises awareness for environmental concerns and the protection of our planet. This year’s theme is plastics.

Victoria Cox at Mount Cook said, “Plastic pollution is a real and growing threat to our planet that rivals Climate Change. From injuring marine life to disrupting human hormones, plastic pollution is having a devastating impact. The good news is we can solve the problem – this festival will provide lots of inspiration to help you become aware of how much plastic you are using and how you can recycle it.”

World Earth Day was first launched on 22nd April 1970. Today, over 1 billion people from 192 countries celebrate Earth Day!

So, make sure you are one of those people – Come along between 10am – 5pm - there are no tickets, just drop in on the day and pay for each activity as you do it. Refreshments and food served at Mount Cook and the National Stone Centre's cafe all day and parking, and toilets are available.

Park at The National Stone Centre, Porter Lane, Middleton by Wirksworth, Matlock, DE4 4LS – grab your program and enjoy the day.
