Homeless Sunday to be marked at Derby Cathedral this weekend

Published on Thursday 25 January 2018

More than 200 people are expected to attend Derby Cathedral on 28 January to celebrate Homeless Sunday – a nationally recognised day that will be celebrated by thousands of churches and groups across the country.

This is the eighth year the day has been marked at Derby Cathedral. The service will be presided over by the Right Reverend Dr Alastair Redfern, the Bishop of Derby, and attended by representatives from local homeless organisations, people from the local community, including some who have personal experience of homelessness and some of Derbyshire’s key dignitaries. Expected to attend are Cllr John Whitby, the Mayor of Derby; Cllr Mary Hopkinson, the Mayor of Erewash; Cllr David Wilson, the Mayor of Amber Valley; Annie Hall, the High Sheriff of Derbyshire and William Tucker, HM Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire.

Derventio Housing Trust has helped to organise the service. Jackie Carpenter, Assistant Director, said:

“Homelessness is on the rise locally and across the country, and more and more people are struggling to keep a roof over their head.

“The purpose of Homeless Sunday is threefold. It is a way for us to show our concern for the individuals affected by homelessness, challenge the conditions that create it and celebrate work that tackles the problem. We will also be joined at the service by Derby Churches Night Shelter, Padley Group, and YMCA Derbyshire.

“We are proud to have the opportunity to once again mark Homeless Sunday at Derby Cathedral, and delighted to have such wonderful support from our Patron, Bishop Alastair.”

The Eucharist service at Derby Cathedral will take place on Sunday 28th January at 10.45am. Everyone is welcome to attend. Free refreshments will be available afterwards as well as the opportunity to learn more about the work being done to tackle homelessness in Derby.
