If you needed medical help or advice, would you know where to go?

Published on Sunday 14 January 2018

Many people’s default setting is to head straight to A&E, but did you know that you could massively reduce your wait time, or avoid having to go to A&E at all by calling 111?

111 is the National Health Service (NHS) non-emergency number. Calls are answered 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and are free from any UK landline or mobile phone.

A trained advisor will ask you questions to assess your symptoms, then give you the healthcare advice you need or direct you straightaway to the local service that can help you best. That could be:

A minor injury unit – nearest at Ripley Hospital and Ilkeston Community Hospital

An urgent care centre or a walk-in centre

A community nurse

An emergency dentist

An out-of-hours doctor

Or a late-opening chemist.

Minor injury units in Derbyshire are all rated as outstanding by the NHS regulator the Care Quality Commission for the level of care provided. There are four minor injury units in Derbyshire, run by Derbyshire Community Health Services

NHS Foundation Trust, and they are located in:
Ripley Hospital
Ilkeston Community Hospital
Whitworth Hospital, Darley Dale
Buxton Hospital.

All four minor injury units are open 8am to 10pm every day - including weekends and bank holidays. You can walk in, no appointments necessary. Assessment is carried out by a team of highly experienced staff, led by emergency nurse practitioners giving quick diagnosis and care.

Patients are usually seen and treated within an hour at all four minor injury units. A live waiting time comparison with A & E departments in Derby and Chesterfield is available here: http://www.dchs.nhs.uk/home/our-services/find_services_by_topic/minor_injury_unit/

Melissa Dalton is lead matron for all four minor injury units in Derbyshire. She said: “The types of problems that our minor injury units can treat are many and varied.” It includes: non-life-threatening injuries, minor infections and rashes, strains and sprains, cuts and bruises, bites and stings, minor burns, wound infections and eye injuries, coughs, colds and flu-like symptoms, possible broken bones, skin complaints, men’s and women’s health problems, emergency contraception, advice on staying healthy and information on local services. No appointment is necessary and patients will be assessed by an experienced nurse.

More details about Derbyshire’s four minor injury units are available on this webpage: http://www.dchs.nhs.uk/home/our-services/find_services_by_topic/minor_injury_unit/
