More MOT Tests Offered At Derbyshire County Council Depots

Published on Saturday 13 January 2018

More motorists will be able to have their vehicle’s MOT check carried out at Derbyshire County Council depots after the authority expanded its service.

The county council has been offering Ministry of Transport (MOT) tests to private motorists at three of its fleet service workshops for 25 years. Motorcyclists have been able to get the test at one of its workshops.

The service has now been extended to offer drivers and motorcyclists more convenient and cheaper checks. In addition to the MOT test they can now get minor faults repaired on site.

Car, van and minibus drivers can access the services at the county council’s Ambergate, Brimington and Dove Holes premises. Motorcyclists will be able to get tests and repairs carried out at the Ambergate workshop.

This will include adjustments to headlights, exhaust and brake testing, windscreen wiper and light bulb replacement and diagnostic testing to air conditioning and warning lights.

The cost of the MOT tests has also been reduced. For cars and light vans the charge is £40 – down from £54 – and for motorcycles it is £28 instead of £29.

Councillor Simon Spencer, Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Infrastructure, said: “We have provided MOT tests to members of the public for many years although the service has been more limited as we’ve not had the ability to do repairs. This meant motorists had to take their vehicles elsewhere before bringing them back if they needed a retest.”

Councillor Spencer added: “However, with a reduction in the number of council vehicles that we have to maintain and their newer condition it means we have more capacity to test and fix private vehicles.”

The council has a fleet of 500 vehicles – including cars, vans, trucks, lorries and gritters – which it maintains. It also services and MOTs vehicles on behalf of Derbyshire Constabulary, the Peak District National Park Authority, academy schools and community transport schemes.

The new service for members of the public is expected to generate around £15,000 each year for the council.
