Depot Refurbishment Project at Crich Tramway Village
Since closing to the public on 6th November for winter maintenance, the tram depots at Crich Tramway Village have been undergoing a programme of much needed refurbishment to preserve the historic tramcar collection.
The improvements will mean that the tramcars will be stored in a much better environment, removing the problems related to the accumulation of mould, which has previously set in over recent years, due to the inefficient insulation.
The Curatorial team started the project off by removing the artefacts which were previously on display. This was followed by the Big Tram Shunt, which took place as part of the last day of the operating season on 5th November.
Bailey Construction have been appointed as the main contractor and have responsibility for the overall control of the project. Working for them are several sub-contractors for the individual areas such as roofing, partitions and electrics.
Laura Waters, Curator at Crich Tramway Village, said: “Planning how to rearrange and get all the trams moved around, is no simple task and requires skill and knowledge of the collection, to know what will fit in which area, in which combination and any particular quirks of individual trams”.
Re-roofing has been in progress for the last couple of weeks, and the new roof will not only improve the insulation, but also provide far more daylight than it did previously, whilst screening out harmful UV light. It is planned for completion before Christmas.
In the New Year, the plan is to install partition walls between depots 3 and 4, insulate the walls, complete the electrical work and finally replace the wall at the front of depot 2 which extends out from the rest of the buildings.
Laura said: “The beginning of the new year will also see the fittings for our new bespoke pivot doors installed, the design of which has been inspired by photos from our Archive, of some of the original depot doors that featured on various tramway systems depot buildings.
“The design of the doors has been a challenge for our sub-contractors, Jewers, but we’re working with them to finalise the installation schedule for the New Year”.
