County's Hate Crime Helpline Gets Funding Boost
Victims of hate crime and discrimination are set to benefit as Derbyshire County Council extend their support to the county-wide Stop Hate helpline.
This means that victims of any form of hate crime or discrimination can continue to report the incident at locations other than police stations – helping to remove any barriers that might stop someone from reporting the crime.
Residents can call the helpline 24 hours a day on 0800 1381625 or text 07717989025 to report a hate crime incident. Alternatively, report online at www.stophateuk.org/derbyshire
The service was first set up in 2008 and more than 135 contacts have been made over the last year.
Hate crime is a largely under-reported offence and can include physical attacks, the threat of attack or verbal abuse and insults.
According to the Crime Survey for England and Wales there were an estimated 222,000 incidents of hate crime recorded on average each year from 2012/13 to 2014/15.
Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Health and Communities Councillor Carol Hart said: “It’s important that Derbyshire people feel free to live their lives with no fear of discrimination or abuse – and know where to turn for help and support when they need it.
“The helpline is a fantastic example of how the county council is working effectively in partnership with organisations like Derbyshire Constabulary and Derby City Council to help protect residents from harm.”
The £3,500 funding boost from the county council will ensure the helpline is fully staffed and running until at least March 2018.
Derbyshire’s free confidential helpline is run by Leeds-based charity Stop Hate UK which provides a variety of ways to access the service including by phone, text, post, online or via British Sign Language (BSL) using an video-relay interpretation service.
