Sign Up To Learn Something New In The New Year

Published on Monday 20 November 2017

Residents are being invited to sign up to learn something new in the New Year with Derbyshire County Council’s Adult Community Education Service.

Bookings can be made from Monday 27 November for hundreds of daytime and evening courses and activities on offer providing people with the chance to study for new qualifications, improve their employment opportunities or explore new hobbies and interests.

The spring term starts on Monday 8 January 2018 and people can sign up online at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/adulteducation

Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Young People Councillor Alex Dale said: “There are some fantastic courses on offer in the New Year for people looking to learn a new skill, work towards a qualification, gain employment, or discover a new hobby.

“From maths and English to fitness and bee keeping – there’s something for everyone so why not challenge yourself and see where learning something new can take you.

“Help and support is available and many learners are eligible for free or heavily subsidised fees too.”

There are free courses to help people get back into work such as English and maths tuition, CV writing, job applications and interview skills, advice on starting your own business and a range of traineeships and apprenticeships.

Other courses include:

• Teacher training
• Childcare
• Computing
• First aid
• Health and social care
• Languages
• Lip reading and signed communication
• Art and design
• Plastering and construction
• Bricklaying
• Upholstery and furniture renovation
• Pottery
• Sewing and crafts
• Yoga

Gift vouchers are available in denominations of £5, £10, £20 and £50 which can be put towards the cost of courses.

Classes are held at county council adult community education centres as well as at around 80 community venues. Residents can find their nearest centre by visiting www.derbyshire.gov.uk/adulteducation

Residents without internet access can sign up using a computer at any of the council’s libraries or call in at their local adult community centre to book a place.

Course listings are also available in the ‘What’s on’ leaflets at adult community education centres, libraries and other locations around the county.
