Winter Woodland & Ponds Conservation day

Published on Friday 17 November 2017

DerwentWISE and the Arkwright Society are inviting people to join them for a day looking after Slinter Mill Ponds and Woodland in Cromford on Saturday18th November from 10am-3pm. It’s a chance to get away from the central heating and fill your lungs with fresh winter air, whilst helping the wood and ponds wildlife and heritage.

You’ll find Hannah and Rachel at the dam at Slinter Pond at 10am, or if you just want to drop in for part of the day, follow the main path up the valley and look out for them from there. Dress for the weather (with wellies if you have them) and bring a packed lunch.

‘Although it’s just outside the World Heritage Site, the weirs and dams were adopted by Richard Arkwright to help power his cotton mills. It’s part of the Derwent Valley Mills’ story’ says Rachel Costigan from the DerwentWISE project which commissioned a management plan for the site. ‘There’s a range of tasks the plan recommends we look at every year, but we can only make that happen with help from the local community’.

There’s a reason why they’ve not picked a summer’s day for the work. ‘The willow trees in the wet valley bottom make an important habitat, but the leaves they shed are helping to silt up the old waterways. One of the recommendations is to remove leaf litter from around the dams.’ Says Hannah Steggles from the Arkwright Society who owns the site. ‘That will be one of the tasks, along with the annual survey of the archaeological features and simply clearing litter.’

The DerwentWISE project is a landscape scale Heritage Lottery Funded project managed by Derbyshire Wildlife Trust that restores habitats and industrial heritage within the Lower Derwent Valley. For more information about the DerwentWISE project please visit www.derwentwise.com and about The Arkwright Society please visit www.cromfordmills.org.uk

The day is weather dependant – if the forecast is bad, contact the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust on 01773 881 188 for confirmation the event will go ahead.
