Two Safer Neighbourhood policing teams in the Amber Valley nominated for sustainable travel award

Published on Monday 6 November 2017

Two of our Safer Neighbourhood policing teams in the Amber Valley and schools they have been working with have been nominated for a regional sustainable travel award.

Our officers have been working with schools in Riddings and Ripley to help promote and encourage active, safe and environmentally friendly travel, and the projects have seen them put forward for the Modeshift STARS School of the Region (Midlands).

They were nominated by Derbyshire County Council’s Sustainable Travel Team who work to encourage and develop sustainable travel options across the county.

The awards are designed to recognise and reward Modeshift members for schemes, projects or other activities that support and encourage sustainable travel, by highlighting best practise, showing innovation and being inspirational.

PCSOs Richard Plant and Meikel Miller, of the Somercotes and Riddings Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team, worked with Riddings Infant School, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service and Microscooters UK to organise awareness raising visits and walks to school.

They helped set up visits to the school from police and fire service investigation dog units, and a sponsored walk or wheel to school to raise money for the RSPCA.

The school then ran whole school walks every Wednesday for a school term, involving parents, children and teachers.

Adult scooters were loaned for the initiative and our officers’ security marked the youngster’s equipment.

Rob Bounds, of Derbyshire County Council’s Sustainable Travel Team, said: “Riddings Infant and Nursery School has demonstrated creativity and commitment to the cause of sustainable travel. They have established an innovative and exciting rolling programme of activities which build on the relations with partnership organisations to inspire and encourage more active ways to travel.

“Staff at the school are active advocates taking part in cycling, scooting and walking activities, including staff who are trained to deliver Balanceability, and thanks to Microscooters, a group of parents now act as ‘Scooter Champions’, scooting to school with their children.”

He added: “Great links have also been established with the emergency services which support active travel, build community relations and help bring the curriculum to life.”

PCSOs Alison Dare and Sarah Dufton, of the Ripley Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team, worked with their colleagues and local businesses with Lons Infant School to help organise and take part in a number of events including the National Clean Air Day, cycling and scooting and the Art of STARS challenge.

They helped inspire and encourage children and parents to walk, scoot or cycle from a nearby car park by developing a ‘park and stride’ despite the barriers of a busy road and steep hill.

Funding was secured from Police Mutual to provide Ped-i-bal bikes for the youngsters, which has allowed teachers to develop youngsters cycling skills. The team also offered scooter smart training and security marking for the bikes.

Rob Bounds said: “Lons Infant school has really embraced Modeshift STARS with the art co-coordinator writing a scheme of work to integrate active travel within the scheme of work in an imaginative and exciting way. This included recreating photos from the Metropolitan Police archive with the officers from Ripley Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team, creating a mural using a tandem and photographing silhouettes of the different stages of learning to ride a bike.

“The Police Mutual funded bikes are used weekly to help develop children’s balance and coordination with some children now progressing to riding without stabilisers.”

He added: “Staff members join in with ‘Park and Stride’ events to encourage participation from parents and pupils, all of which is frequently shared on the schools and police team’s Twitter and Instagram accounts.”

The award ceremony is due to take place on Wednesday, November 15 at Kings Hall in Stoke on Trent.
