Derbyshire County Council School Meals Service Scoops Two National Awards
Thousands of Derbyshire children are receiving school meals from a service that has scooped two national awards for innovation within just three months.
Derbyshire County Council’s catering service has beaten off competition from across the UK to claim the Innovation Award at ‘The Cateys’ – the annual food service and catering industry ceremony in London.
The catering service’s nomination for the award was for a two-day healthy eating event in 2016 for primary schools at the council’s Lea Green Development Centre
The county council had already received the Nan Berger Memorial Award for increasing meal uptake and raising the profile of the school catering service through innovation at the at the Lead Association for Catering in Education Awards for Excellence event in July.
Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Young People Councillor Alex Dale said: “Winning these national awards is a superb accolade for our catering service and I would like to congratulate the team on their success.
“It demonstrates the degree of planning and hard work that goes into ensuring that children in Derbyshire not only have excellent meal options in our schools but have an understanding of the process of producing food and reducing food waste.
“Giving young people the best start in life and encouraging healthy lifestyles are among the council’s key priorities and this achievement underlines the crucial role our catering service plays in helping to meet both of those aims.”
Around 300 year six schoolchildren took part in fun activities based around healthy eating and lifestyles.
The theme of the event was based around the 2016 Rio Olympics and incorporated sport, dance and music, as well as food which gave the students a taste of what to expect once they move to secondary school.
The aim of the day was to teach children about where food comes from, trying new tastes and being active, with a view to educating them about the importance of having a healthy lifestyle for a healthy future.
Councillor Dale added: “The catering service received fantastic support for the project from the schools, which had travelled from across Derbyshire to take part, and all the staff at Lea Green.
“What also makes winning this award so special is that our project was chosen by the food service industry, which shows how our well our service compares with all providers in this very competitive sector.”
Derbyshire County Council provides approximately 34,000 primary, secondary and special school meals per day cooked and served in 380 kitchens and dining centres.
