Ripley based charity need your votes to secure vital funding for their Man Cave

Published on Wednesday 25 October 2017

Amber Valley Centre for Voluntary Services (AVCVS) who provide support to Amber Valley people with voluntary action are calling for the support of the local community to help win funding for their Man Cave project as part of the Aviva Community Fund 2017.

Their Man Cave Project is relying on votes to increase their chances of winning funding of up to £25,000 which they hope will go towards restoring their venue which is an old, unused building and providing materials for their Man Cave volunteers to use. Only projects with the most votes will become finalists, so additional support is vital.

The Man Cave was set up in June 2017 with the aim of providing a regular meeting space for men who traditionally do not join in with group social activity, including those with health problems, learning difficulties, mental ill health and suicidal thoughts. At the Man Cave, they find company but in focusing themselves around a practical task we believe more interaction will take place. In completing practical projects using skills they bring with them or acquire through working together we believe confidence, self esteem and mental well being will be improved.

The group has 10 gentlemen who attend on a weekly basis, but the more the merrier and new members are always welcome. They come together to work on gardening projects and restoration of furniture. With the help of this funding, they would like to buy materials to make items such as work benches and recycling items to make lamps and wall planters, as well as making the building they use, more sustainable.

Paul Smith, lead Man Cave volunteer said, ‘Since the Man Cave started, I have noticed a positive. change in both myself and the other participants. We have become more sociable and better at working as a team. We discuss ideas and can bring all our different skills and techniques together and learn from one another, whilst having a bit of banter at the same time’.

He added, ‘The Aviva Funding would make a great difference to our Man Cave group as we would be able to utilise the building better and make our group self-sustainable, hopefully attracting new members to join’.
