Derbyshire Rail Projects Scoop Success
Three Derbyshire rail projects have proved themselves on track after scooping top awards for their community work.
Cromford Station Group, Friends of Buxton Station and Long Eaton Station Adopters each picked up accolades at this year’s National Community Rail Awards, at The Roundhouse, in Derby.
A silver award in the ‘Your Station’ category went to Cromford Station Group for transforming its overgrown surroundings with plants and bulbs. Childrens’ artwork now also hangs at the station.
Second place in the Community Arts Schemes section was awarded to Friends of Buxton Station for its Joe the railway guard sculpture made from reclaimed scrap metal from the nearby engine shed. Joe now stands on platform two.
And Long Eaton Station Adopters took a third in the Most Enhanced Station Buildings and Surroundings category for its Long Eaton Street Scene Transformation Project. This included turning the neglected station entrance into a landscape of raised, planted beds.
Councillor Trevor Ainsworth, Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Support Member for Highways, Transport and Infrastructure, said: “The success of these projects demonstrates the valuable work and commitment of local volunteers. These type of schemes benefit local communities and offer an improved environment for passengers.”
Two of the groups work as part of Derbyshire’s Community Rail Partnerships (CRPs). The Derwent Valley Line CRP covers Cromford Station and High Peak and Hope Valley CRP oversees Buxton Station.
The CRPs are part-funded by Derbyshire County Council and supported by county council officers.
Long Eaton Station Adopters is a partnership between Derbyshire County Council, Sawley Parish Council, Cross Country Trains, East Midlands Trains and Network Rail.
A further 10 rail improvement projects were also shortlisted for Community Rail Awards. These included other projects at Buxton and Cromford and enhancements to Glossop, Hadfield, Ilkeston, Whaley Bridge and Willington stations.
This year’s awards attracted more than 2,000 entries across 11 categories.
Councillor Ainsworth, who is also Chairman of the Derwent Valley Line CRP, added: “Derbyshire County Council is proud to support such initiatives and the contribution of the CRPs which help co-ordinate so much of the volunteers’ work. Recognition at these awards is highly deserved.”
