Ripley Community Hospital set to get brand new extension for better blood testing facilities
Construction work started this week on a brand new £215,000 extension at Ripley Community Hospital which will create much improved facilities for patients coming in for blood tests (phlebotomy) – thanks to generous support from the hospital’s League of Friends.
The building project at the hospital site in Sandham Lane, Ripley, DE5 3HE, is expected to take four months to complete and will include a totally new phlebotomy department and extended waiting area.
It is being made possible thanks to the generous support of Ripley Hospital’s League of Friends, a registered charity, which is fully funding the project. The League of Friends is a group of volunteers who support the hospital with their fundraising, hosting events and running the tea bar to enhance patient care.
Phyllis Holmes, Chair of the League of Friends at Ripley, said: “We are delighted to be able to support this project to improve the environment for patients coming into the hospital for blood tests.”
The number of patients coming to Ripley Community Hospital for blood tests has grown steadily in recent year and outgrown the available space. It is not unusual for 100 patients to be seen in a morning for blood tests at Ripley, making it a very busy service.
The new extension will be positioned in the courtyard off the current waiting room area of the hospital site and will include a purpose-built clinical room with three patient phlebotomy chairs plus additional waiting area space for patients to wait in comfort.
There are currently two phlebotomy chairs so when the new extension is completed, with three chairs, patients can potentially be seen more quickly. The blood test service is for adults and children between 12 – 16 if attending with an adult.
Erin Marshall, locality lead for sites and services at Ripley Community Hospital, part of Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust, said: “This is an exciting time for us, having the final go-ahead for this hospital extension and welcoming the builders in this week. We are anticipating that the work will take around four months to complete so it should all be finished sometime in February.
“We’d like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding while the work is underway. Unfortunately we’ve had temporarily to close the children’s play area which is in the middle of the construction area but we’ll have it back in action just as soon as we can.”
