Derbyshire Joins National Appeal For More Adoptive Families
Derbyshire residents are being asked to consider whether they could give a permanent, loving home to children in need of adoptive families.
The County Council is supporting National Adoption Week, which runs from today until Sunday (22 October).
The need for more adoptive families for children in care is being highlighted throughout the week.
Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Young People Councillor Alex Dale said: “We are committed to increasing the choice and quality of permanent placements for all children in care in Derbyshire.
“Adopting a child can so often be hugely rewarding, but we don’t underestimate the challenge of adopting and have nothing but admiration for anyone who chooses to give that huge commitment to adopt a child and offer them a loving and stable home for life.
“We also believe that it is in the best interests of children in care who have brothers and sisters to be able to stay with their siblings.
“We would be very keen to receive enquiries from potential adopters who can provide a home, especially for more than one child if that means that siblings can be kept together.”
The County Council’s adoption team is inviting members of the public who may be interested in becoming a parent or parents to children in care to attend an information evening at County Hall, Matlock, on Thursday 2 November 2017, from 5.30-8pm, where they can find out more about adoption.
Councillor Dale said: “Every child in care in Derbyshire deserves the opportunity to enjoy a stable and caring home life to enable them to realise their potential.
“Adoption can transform the lives of children who have faced uncertainty, neglect and even abuse before being taken into our care.”
He added: “To help people to make that vital decision to adopt and to guide them through the process, we offer full support from our adoption social work team.
“I’d urge anyone who has ever considered adopting a child or is intrigued about what it is all about to come along to our information evening.
“It could lead to making the best decision of your life.”
