Volunteers needed to spearhead Christmas food operation in Derbyshire

Published on Saturday 14 October 2017

Can you step forward and make a difference this Christmas?

Volunteers are needed to help deliver surplus food across the county as part of Feeding Derbyshire, a countywide social eating project.

As part of the project, Derbyshire County Council funded the setting up of a food hub in Chesterfield that distributes surplus food to community projects such as community kitchens and food banks.

The hub is run by FareShare East Midlands, a charity that works to reduce food waste and food inequality.

FareShare now needs volunteer drivers to help meet the growing demand for the hub’s services during Christmas and New Year.

At least six drivers are needed to work at the depot and recruits will need to be able to work flexible hours, delivering food to outlets located in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire out of the FareShare’s hub in Chesterfield.

Simone Connolly, who leads the team at FareShare East Midlands’ Chesterfield depot said: “We’re now in the build-up phase for Christmas and New Year, which is our busiest time of the year.

“We are looking at a significant growth in demand for support, which we can only accommodate if we increase the number of drivers on our team.

“So, we’re asking anyone who has a desire to help some very worthwhile and important causes to get in touch. Their willingness to volunteer will literally mean the difference between us being able to offer help, or having to refuse requests.”

FareShare East Midlands’ runs a fleet of long wheel based delivery vans across the region. Most of the drivers are volunteers – and some have been involved with FareShare since the charity was formed in July 2008.

Councilor Carol Hart, Cabinet Member for Health and Communities said: “Volunteers do an amazing job and without them many social eating projects would struggle to run.

“Volunteering for Fareshare offers a rewarding experience and the chance to make a difference to people over the festive season.”

Anyone interested in becoming a FareShare volunteer can contact Alyson at the Chesterfield depot. The telephone number is 0116 867735.
