Speeding driver fined after topping 90mph on motorway

Published on Thursday 12 October 2017

A driver who was clocked at more than 90mph on a stretch of motorway has been fined more than £870.

Wayne Harrand was driving a silver Kia Sportage on the northbound carriageway near Tibshelf when he was clocked by a speed camera.

The 39-year-old had been travelling at 91mph, at a time when the variable speed limit had been reduced to 60 because of a lane closure on the motorway.

Harrand, of Spitfire Road, Castle Donington, admitted speeding – which happened on the morning of January 3 – and was sentenced on September 29.

He was fined £876, with additional costs pushing the total fine beyond £1,000. He was also banned from driving for a week.

Sergeant Scott Jeffreys, from our roads policing unit, said: “This case shows the very real financial cost of breaking the speed limit.

“Not only does this driver face fine and costs totalling nearly £1,050, but he will also face hugely increased insurance costs in the future.

“Speed limits are there for a reason, and they must be obeyed by all drivers. In this case, the limit had been reduced to 60mph for safety but even if the national speed limit still applied, Wayne Harrand would still have been driving way above it.

“The slightest error at that speed could cause catastrophe and all drivers should stick to the limit to avoid the financial cost or, worse, the cost to life.”
