D.H. Lawrence Festival Organ Recital at St Mary Church, Greasley

Published on Thursday 7 September 2017

As part of the D.H Lawrence Festival of Culture, in association with the D.H.Lawrence Society and generously supported by Liberty Leisure, organist and composer Alan Wilson will be giving an organ recital in the historic church of St. Mary, Greasley.

This church featured in some of Lawrence’s novels, as well as having a strong connection with Beauvale Priory, a Carthusian order, now an ancient scheduled monument. Beauvale was home to the first two Christian martyrs St. John Houghton and St. Robert Lawrence. Alan will be drawing on many aspects of local history through organ pieces and readings, and much of the concert weaves around music connected with the three great local ‘luminaries’ D.H.Lawrence, Lord Byron and Eric Coates.

Coates, born and brought up in Hucknall, wrote some of the greatest ‘light’ music of the twentieth century, many pieces used as signature tunes to BBC programmes.

Byron’s work was acknowledged all over the world and here is a chance to hear how great composers set his texts to music.

With D.H.Lawrence, a different aspect is explored – his love of music is exemplified by a whole load of notated songs, which were important to him in his early formative years. These works have been newly researched and transcribed for the organ by Alan Wilson.

Organist and Director of Music at St. Mary–le-Bow, London (the famous ‘Bow Bells church) and former Director of Music at Queen Mary, University of London, Alan returns to his roots, being brought up in Eastwood, and brings back to life many musical memories from his childhood, which curiously seem to have a direct link with music that Lawrence was brought up with too.

The programme is full of rich gems, and together with organ music, readings are orated by important local people, who are huge contributors to the current local heritage.

A new piece by Alan is also to be premiered, based on a well known local hymn tune that he grew up with.

This promises to be a unique occasion where local talent meets local heritage and the splendour of this fine church with magnificent views around is matched by a fine historic ‘Lloyd’ organ from 1910 and some very beautiful music.

An occasion not to be missed!

It is on Sunday 10th September 2017 at 3pm, at St Mary’s Greasley (NG162AB).

Entry £5, tickets and programmes available at the door.
